Concrete does not dry. That single misunderstanding is behind more weak, dusty, cracked flatwork in Central Texas than any other, so it is worth getting right before you schedule a summer pour. Concrete cures through a chemical reaction that needs water to keep going, and Texas heat spends all day trying to steal that water away. What a good crew does about that fight decides whether your slab reaches full strength or just looks finished.
Curing is chemistry, not evaporation
When water meets cement, they react and grow interlocking crystals that give concrete its strength, a process called hydration. It needs moisture to continue, and it keeps going for weeks, though most of the strength arrives in the first several days. Drying is the enemy of that reaction, not the goal. A slab that loses its water too soon to the sun and wind stops curing before it is strong, and no amount of time afterward fixes it. What you get instead is a surface that stays soft, dusts under traffic, and cracks and scales early.
What Texas afternoons do to a fresh pour
A hot, dry, windy afternoon is close to the worst weather you can pour in. Air over 90 or 100 degrees, low humidity, and wind combine to pull water out of the top of the slab far faster than the concrete can bring it up, and the surface skins over and shrinks while the concrete below is still soft. That is plastic shrinkage cracking, the short random cracks that appear within hours, and it is almost entirely a curing failure rather than bad concrete. Why crews start at dawn in July
The fix that costs nothing is timing. Pouring at first light in summer gives the concrete its critical early hours before the afternoon heat and wind arrive, so the slab has begun to set and hold its own water by the time conditions turn hostile. A crew that shows up to pour a driveway at two in the afternoon in July, in full sun, is making your slab's hardest fight harder for no reason. Early starts, shade where it is possible, and dampening the subgrade before the pour so the dry ground does not wick water out of the mix are all part of pouring well in this climate.
Wet curing versus curing compounds
After the pour, the slab has to be kept moist while it cures, and there are two ways to do it. Wet curing keeps water on the surface directly, with wet burlap, cotton mats, a sprinkler, or plastic sheeting that traps moisture, ideally for several days. Curing compounds are sprayed on to seal the moisture in, forming a thin membrane that slows evaporation so the concrete cures on its own water. Both work when done right. What does not work is nothing at all, which is what a slab gets when a crew pours and drives away. Ask which method the bid includes; a stated curing method is the mark of a crew that intends to actually do it.
The seven-day window
Concrete gains most of its strength in the first seven days, and that is the window that rewards attention. Keeping the slab moist and protected through that first week, and off it, no vehicles and no heavy loads until it has cured, buys you the strength you paid for. It reaches enough strength for foot traffic in a day or two and for cars in about a week, but the chemistry keeps improving for a month. Rushing a slab into service early is borrowing against its lifespan, which is worth remembering when you are impatient to park on a fresh driveway.
Water at the truck is a red flag
Watch for one thing on pour day. If the concrete looks stiff and someone adds water to the mix at the truck to make it flow easier, that extra water raises the water-to-cement ratio and permanently weakens the slab, and it shows up later as a dusty surface and more cracking. There are correct ways to keep a mix workable in heat, done at the plant through the mix design or with admixtures, but a garden hose into the chute on your driveway is not one of them. It trades your slab's long-term strength for the crew's short-term convenience.
Season by season in Georgetown
Spring and fall are the ideal pour windows here: mild temperatures, and the concrete cures at a steady pace. Summer is pourable but demanding, and it is worth insisting on a dawn start and a real curing plan for any July or August job. Winter is usually fine, with one caution: fresh concrete must not freeze in its first day or two, so a crew should watch the overnight low and protect the slab with blankets on a hard freeze. Georgetown winters leave plenty of workable days, but the occasional deep freeze is real and worth planning around.
