Sealer is the concrete upsell you will hear about most and understand least. The honest version is simpler than the sales version: sealing genuinely helps some surfaces, is optional on others, and does nothing at all about the problem homeowners most fear, which is the ground moving under the slab. Here is what sealing does, what it does not, and which of your surfaces actually wants it.
Two kinds of sealer that behave nothing alike
Almost every concrete sealer falls into one of two families, and confusing them is where regret starts.
Penetrating sealers. These soak into the concrete and work from within, repelling water and de-icing salts without changing how the surface looks or feels. They are breathable, invisible, and do not get slick, which makes them the low-drama choice for driveways, walks, and exposed aggregate. You will not see them, and that is the point.
Film-forming sealers. These sit on top as a thin coat, usually acrylic, giving that wet look and deepening color, which is why stamped and decorative work uses them. The trade is upkeep and behavior: the film wears and must be reapplied, and it can turn slick when wet and cloud or blush white if water gets trapped under it. On a smooth surface near water, that matters a lot.

Resealing stamped work is a standing obligation
If you own stamped concrete, resealing is not a someday maintenance item; it is part of the deal you signed up for. The film-forming sealer that gives stamped work its color and depth wears down outdoors, and in Georgetown sun it typically needs redoing every two to three years. Skip it and the color grays, the pattern flattens, and the surface starts to look tired. What it does is resist stains, repel water and salt, deepen the look of decorative work, and make cleanup easier. That is useful and worth doing on the right surface, and it is no substitute for good joints, good reinforcement, and good drainage.
Timing and a few cautions
New decorative concrete is usually sealed once it has cured, often around a month after the pour, not the day it is finished. Reseal in mild, dry weather so the coat cures clean, spring or fall being ideal windows. Two mistakes to avoid: piling on too many coats of a film former, which traps moisture and clouds, and sealing a damp slab, which does the same thing. On any surface you walk on barefoot or wet, a pool deck above all, insist on a non-slip additive in a film-forming sealer or choose a penetrating one instead. Sealing an exposed aggregate patio is routine maintenance; a crack that needs sealing is a different job with a different product, so do not expect one bottle to do both.
Sealing is worth doing when it matches the surface and pointless or harmful when it does not. Penetrating sealer quietly protects a driveway; a film former earns its keep on stamped work and demands resealing in return; a pool deck needs grip more than gloss. Match the product to the job, and remember what no label can promise: the slab's real durability was decided by its joints, its steel, and the water moving under it, long before any sealer went on.
